Pohořelice lies about 13 km south-west of Zlín. The first written mention of the municipality dates from 1255.

The Baroque château was created between 1689 and 1699 by rebuilding a fortress. The Church of St John of Nepomuk was added to it in 1739. The Baroque Church of St Giles stands in the local cemetery; it was consecrated in 1770 on the site of an older medieval building.

The local primary school teaches pupils in Years 1 to 5 and also has two nursery classes. The municipal office is on Školní Street. The municipality-run home for mostly self-sufficient older people occupies a renovated building of the former château.
